Big Day Out’s Aussie Day in Sydney

The law of karma seemed to have worked for organisers of the Big Day Out who donated $20,000 last week to the Queensland Flood Relief Fund. The weather for yesterday’s Sydney leg of the BDO tour remained sunny throughout, giving artists that might have been new to these shores a true taste of Aussie summer. Iggy Pop’s been here before, but bounced about on stage like it was his first time performing ever. Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, on the other hand, whose been to these shores several times, was more laidback as is par for the course with the hippy sentiment of his band’s brand of psychedelic rave. M.I.A. was a bit of a disappointment with much of her cacophonous show just that – a bit too much noise and not enough genuine sentiment seeming to come across in her delivery; we still love the gal though. Other highlights for us were Megan Washington, LCD Soundsystem, Crystal Castles, and Adelaide gal gone real good, Sia. If the BDO proved one thing this year, its that variety is what works best in an outdoor festival. Progressive, retro, classic and contemporary; bring on more of it all, anytime.
