Debbie Harry rocks out for Swarovski

It’s a lovely thing to be invited to the opening of a Swarovski boutique; all that bling does after all make for beautiful decor, let alone accessories. It’s an even lovelier thing that the brand then invited guests of the opening to Bennelong at the Opera House for a glorious three-course dinner. But to ultimately be treated with a surprise performance by rock icon Debbie Harry and her band Blondie was simply awesome.

About a hundred guests including media and a bevy of local film stars and fashion designers were squeezed in to the new, stunningly designed Swarovski boutique in the recently opened Westfield shopping precinct in the heart of Sydney. Organisers and brand managers kept things short and sweet on the speeches side of things and pretty much left well-heeled guests to our own devices to sip champers and mingle. The modern lux brand revealed pieces from its Spring Summer 2011 Accessories Collection that go under the romantic banner of ‘Wings Of Poetry’ (all gorgeous precisely-cut crystal) while introducing its first ever range of accessories for men (hooray!).

The design of the boutique was overlooked by Japanese genius Tokujin Yoshioka who embraced a ‘Crystal Forest’ theme in keeping with Swarovski’s nature-loving ethos. Mirror finishes in stainless steel work in sync with stunning crystal installations that hang from the ceiling. Outside the boutique, the concept is amplified using a myriad stainless steel prisms. The sparkling facade is over seven metres high and takes on the lights and reflections from the street. What better representation for a brand that has always connoted glamour and glitz?

It’s fitting, too, that Swarovski invited Debbie Harry to perform in celebration of the boutique opening. The singer often is involved with the special charity event ‘Swarovski: Fashion Rocks’ from which proceeds go to help underprivileged youth. Harry announced that she sincerely is a huge fan of the brand and that she’s always buying girlfriends “those gorgeous little butterfly necklaces” (she means the Nightingale Pendant). There are few things that rock better than Harry. Well, some of the new Swarovski instore collection just might.

The Swarovski boutique is situated Shop 2025, 188 Pitt Street, Sydney.
