Malan Breton

Taiwanese-born designer Malan Breton wasn’t on the official Mercedes-Benz fashion week schedule but nonetheless caused a splash with his Spring 2011 collection. Known for his clean and classic silhouettes, the designer payed homage to film noir of the ‘technicolour’ days. Think latter-day Hitchcock with the contrast turned up high. The range of fabrics were as eclectic as the colour usage: with dresses, skirts and jackets in chiffons, silks, organzas, gazaars, even beaded crepe de chines in hues of silver, acqua, daffodil and signature Breton blue. For the boys, the colour palette was more subdued, but strong silhouettes still key. Add to it it all shiny umbrellas as props, professional dancers between shows, and a 65-piece orchestra, and the designer had himself one very theatrical production – where the clothing itself never failed to impress.
