Stars have a richer year

Despite a shaky global economy and stock market disasters, celebrities have been doing quite well in the financial department, thank you very much. Collectively, the stars on this year’s Forbes Celebrity 100 List earned $4.7 billion, up from the $4.1 billion banked the year prior. So who’s riding atop the cash cow? Oprah Winfrey is the year’s big winner, having earned $315 million over the past 12 months and knocking Angelina Jolie of her perch (Jolie was number one in 2009, but dropped to 18 this year). Beyonce Knowles climbed two spots to number 2, having earned $87 million over the course of the year via album, single, perfume and fashion sales, not to mention a slew of endorsement deals including those for Nintendo and L’Oreal. Director James Cameron came in at number 3, thanks to his success with ‘Avatar’. Lady Gaga hit the list in fourth place, ranking ahead of veteran artists that include Madonna (number 10) and U2 (number 7). With Gaga’s willingness to partner with corporations like Virgin Mobile and Polaroid, she sang to the tune of an estimated $62 million in earnings this year. Of course she also remains number one on Forbes’ top 100 list for social and media coverage.
