Jazzing things up

There are few pleasures in life which are better than first-rate jazz music. Hence we’re looking forward to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image’s ‘Jazz On Film’. Running from June 4 to 13 and coinciding with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, ACMI plan to celebrate the unexpected twist and turns of jazz in all its cross-over glory with film. Federation Square is set to be packed with the screenings of key films which explore the marriage of these two iconic media. Some of the films include the Australian premiere of ‘Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way’ which interviews Bill Cosby, George Lucas, Yo Yo Ma, and even Clint Eastwood (who’da thunk that he’d be a fan?). There will also be a special screening of the animated film ‘Chico & Rita’ (stills pictured) which explores the vibrant jazz scene of Cuba. If you ever thought jazz was a dying art, remember the words of Frank Zappa: “Jazz is not dead; it just smells funny”.

‘Jazz On Film’ runs from June 4th to 13th.
