We love a good bit of Gossip

Projections of hypnotic wheels may have been swirling on a backdrop to a psychedelic ’60s soundtrack, but that’s not what had kept the crowd in a trance: it was the clothing coming down the runway - a 50-strong piece collection by fresh lifestyle label, Gossip Couture. On Wednesday night, Sydney’s fashionable set were drawn to the Global Gallery in Paddington to view designer Mauricio Alpizar’s latest retro-inspired collection. And judging by the frenzy of snaparazzi at the front of the runway, you’d think we were in the heat of Australian Fashion Week already.

Costa Rican born and bred, Alpizar moved to Australia and decided to call it his second home in 1995. Taking cues from his actual homeland (bright prints, light fabrics) and injecting a healthy dose of optical art, his Gossip Couture ‘El Sueno’ 2011 Collection is everything fashion should be: statement-making but not too loudly; accessible but with a sense of flair; and fused with multicultural flavours.

“I wanted this collection to be richer and bolder than my previous ones,” says the designer, who debuted two in 2010. “With so many negative things going on in the world, I think it’s important to bright up our own lives with a bit of colour and style.”

Standout pieces in the women’s range include off-the-shoulder silk chiffon dresses in ’60s-inspired prints (Edie Sedgwick would have put her hand up for them first), denim and lace ‘Lulu’ dresses and skirts, and paired-back twill capes delicately decorated with Swarovski crystal and pearl beading. For the guys, there are soft-as fitted knits juxtaposed by sexy stretch cotton pants, and (in case things get a little trans-seasonal) lamb’s leather jackets with striped cotton lining.

In sum, it’s the kind of Gossip that ought to spread fast.
