Injecting the indie back into St Kilda

Because there’s always so much to do in Melbourne on the cultural front and on the social scene, we find that with every trip there, we’re hardly in our hotel room. Our criteria for a good Melbourne hotel, then, sees location at the top of the list, followed by style, amenities, and a decent rate. Hotel Urban fulfils these three criteria well, and pretty much in that order, in terms of stars.

Located in the heart of St Kilda, with a front door that opens right onto the beach end of Fitzroy Street, the hotel is flanked by some of Melbourne’s best bars and restaurants. Around the corner you’ll find the tempting cafés and boutiques of Acland Street. And for journeys away from St Kilda buzz, you’ll be happy to know there’s a stop for the city tram virtually on the doorstep!

Design-wise, the hotel takes it cues from the school of minimalism, from the neutral coloured lobby to the Scandinavian-style in room furnishings: all blond wood bedding, ivory-hued upholstery, an unimposing beside tables and writing desks. In fact, the only real ‘out there’ element of design in this place is a trompe l’oeil of the famous St Kilda pier emblazoned on the back of the lift which gives the illusion you’re walking into one of those rooms that get tinier and tinier in Alice’s Wonderland.

Things are practical in the amenities department, too, with super-fast free internet available for guests to use in the lobby (on top of free wireless in the rooms), a non-intimidating gym, and popular Suger Café next door that serves hearty breakfasts. Suger’s breakfast pizza for two – at just $18 – does wonders for that inevitable St Kilda hangover). The venue is also open at night and is ideal for meeting friends for a pre-dinner drink before heading out on the Melbourne town.

Which brings us to the final item on our list of criteria: the moolah. Because you’ll likely be spending enough on drinks and dining out, fabulous shopping, and anything distinctively, culturally Victorian that takes your fancy, you’ll be wanting a good rate in your accommodation. Hotel Urban’s nightly rates start at $149 a night. And we like that.
