ARIA nominations are in!

The ARIA awards have reached their quarter-century, and the nominations are out. Leading the pack are Boy & Bear (pictured), Drapht and Gotye with seven nods each, and all three acts will be performing live on the night. Fun fact: Gotye’s album, ‘Making Mirrors’, was just outside the eligibility period for this year’s awards, meaning that all seven of those nominations are for the single ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’. That includes Best Video and Best Producer, which Gotye (aka: Wally de Backer) scooped up on Wednesday as part of the ARIA Artisan awards category. Other big achievers include Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunipingu and Perth outfit Birds Of Tokyo with five nominations each, and Guy Sebastian and Billy Thorpe with four.

The 25th anniversary event will see the return of the ‘Most Popular’ categories for an Australian and an international artist, plus a brand new category: ‘Most Popular Australian Live Artist’. Any Aussie artist who toured the country within the 12 months before 30 September 2011 is eligible. Start sifting through your ticket stubs for the one that had you yelling “BEST-GIG-EVERRR” to embarrassed bystanders on the way home, and cast your vote here.

Moving away from last year’s wind-tunnel experience at the Opera House, the 2011 awards will be held at the Allphones Arena in Sydney Olympic Park. General public tickets go on sale this Monday 17 October from Ticketek for $75 – not bad for the triple-header of live music.
