The ARIAs in a nutshell
Taylor Swift might have stolen the show on the red carpet, looking every inch a doll dressed in a cream gown with sheer sidepanels, but it was singer songwriter Gotye who scooped the most awards at this year’s ARIAs.
This year’s event saw celebrities looking quite possibly their best at any ARIA Awards night – indeed ‘dress to kill’ might as well have been inscribed on the invitation (well, okay, save for those scruffy Good Charlotte boys, and a double-denimed Kram). Gotye himself looked dapper in clean and simple black-buttoned white shirt and black slacks, going on stage to collect no less than four trophies: for Album of the Year, Best Australian Live Act, Best Male Artist, and Best Pop Release (for Somebody That I Used To Know – which continues to do big things internationally).
Gotye’s duetting partner on that track, Kimbra, walked away with the Best Female award for her album Vows, while previous 7-times ARIA winner Missy Higgins added another statue to her collection for Best Adult Contemporary Album with The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle.
Melbourne outfit, The Temper Trap, continued their ARIA success winning Best Group (the award they also won in 2010) and the award for Best Rock Album.
Best Independent Release went to Sydney band, The Jezabels, for their debut LP Prisoner, and the Breakthrough Artist gong went to 360 who was kind enough to light up Cream’s cigarettes on the night since our lighters kept getting nicked.
