‘I Spit On Your Grave 2’ aims for high shock-horror

We at Cream do appreciate a good horror flick, and we love it when a classic gets the rehash treatment – simply to see if the remake pales or impresses in comparison to the original. Some fail dismally, like Prom Night. Others evolve into darn good postmodern franchises (NB: the mashing of Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th). And still others go beyond the call of shock-duty, to make an even more marked impression than the original. That’s the category I Spit On Your Grave 2 fits into.

So many years had passed (32 in fact) for a follow-up to the original I Spit On Your Grave, that producers couldn’t possibly create a ‘sequel’ and instead delivered a remake of sorts in 2010. Still, even though the original 1978 film was billed as “one of the most violent films of all time”, the long-time-coming second version went hell for leather – sometimes literally – to impress horror fans. But that, really, was just the beginning.

I Spit On Your Grave 2 makes an even greater bloody mark in the halls (and on the walls) of horror cinema history. In short, the film is utterly shocking.

There are so many scenes of blatant violence, rape and mutilation that a new category of triple-R could well have been introduced in the codes for cinema classification.

The story centres on New York-based Jessica, whose ambitions to become a model turn every girl’s dream into a total nightmare. Kidnapped, raped and tortured, Jessica is buried alive and left to die, but against all odds manages to escape. Now she has one thing on her mind: revenge; and one by one she goes after her attackers, giving them the eye-for-an-eye treatment.

Suffice to say, after having been raped and tortured so brutally, the vengeance is threefold as over-the-top as the gore that comes before.

If you can put up with the sexist tone of the first half of this movie, you might consider the second half ‘postfeminism’ in the extreme. It’s a pity the empowerment has to come through such brutal measures. But then, those assholes were asking for it.

I Spit On Your Grave 2 is available on Blu-ray and DVD through Anchor Bay Entertainment.
