Leo DiCaprio waves his eco flag; shakes it towards our Great Barrier Reef

Leonardo DiCaprio has delivered some high-fallutin’, if not decadent and debauched, scenes on the big screen – from throwing wild parties in ‘The Great Gatsby’ to guzzling copious champagne on yachts in ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’, but it seems his heart really does sit to the left on world issues.

Yesterday, the actor commented on the “environmental devastation” of coral reefs, pointing directly to Australia’s own Great Barrier Reef as an example.

At an environmental conference in Washington DC, DiCaprio said, “Since my very first dive in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia 20 years ago, to the dive I got to do in the very same location just two years ago, I have witnessed environmental devastation first-hand.

“What once looked like an endless underwater utopia is now riddled with bleached coral reefs and massive dead zones.”

The actor currently backs Barack Obama’s plan to protect the world’s largest marine sanctuary, and has pledged that his own foundation will inject $7 million into ocean-protection projects over the next two years.

The promise was made as the US joins forces with other countries this week to work on combatting illegal fishing and reef destruction in the Pacific.
