British comedian Rik Mayall has died, aged 56. Known for his roles as radical anarchist Rick in the cult series ‘The Young Ones’, arrogant Lord Flashheart in ‘Blackadder’ (opposite Rowan Atkinson), and as the lead protagonist in the blockbuster film ‘Drop Dead Fred’, Mayall was one of Britain’s greatest comedy exports.

Found dead outside his home in southwest London, nobody knows yet what the cause of death was, with news having shocked friends, family and wife Barbara Robbin.

Said Robbin, “We don’t know yet what happened; Rik had a strong heart, so I don’t think it was a heart attack.”

Celebrity and fan tributes continue to flood in via social networking sites, including messages from fellow comedians including Stephen Fry, Russell Brand, ‘The Office’s Ricky Gervais, and ‘Little Britain’s David Walliams – who was the first to break the news on Twitter.

Comic collaborator Ade Edmondson, who starred as ‘Vyvyan’ alongside Rik in ‘The Young Ones’ and is married to ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ star Jennifer Saunders, took a different approach in his tribute, telling media: “There were times when Rik and I were writing together [where] we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. Now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard.”
