Genius of JPG to grace NGV in Melbourne

Where to begin with regard to the genius of designer Jean Paul Gaultier?

Well at the beginning of course, and the National Gallery of Victoria is proud to announce it will be presenting an exhibition of Gaultier’s designs – from his early years in fashion to present day couture, in ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’.

The exhibition will run from 17 October 2014 to 8 February 2015, and here’s the best bit: the man himself will be gracing our shores for the opening in October.

From Jean Paul Gaultier’s very first dress – created in 1971 – and the launch of his first pret-a-porter collection in 1976, to his most recent haute couture collections, visitors will witness an amazing variety of the talented designer’s work – 140 superbly crafted and detailed garments, in fact!

Amongst the pieces (more like ‘works’) will be dresses worn by Australian icons Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Kylie Minogue, as well as the infamous conical bra and corset made for Madonna.

Says Jean Paul, “I am honoured and flattered that my exhibition will travel to Australia, and I am thrilled to be returning to a country that I have visited only once, many years ago. Preparing this exhibition, I have realised how strong my ties to Australia are. The people are what make this country great and you Australians certainly excel!”

Indeed, Nicole Kidman was the designer’s first couture client; he has dressed many of our famous actress and supermodels; and has worked closely with Kylie Minogue on her tour costuming. Kylie herself (pictured above) says she is flattered to be a part of the exhibition.

“As a longtime fan and admirer of Gaultier and his work, it was a great thrill to collaborate with him for my tour costumes,” says Kylie. “His skill at creating drama and fantasy are second to none. On top of that, his kindness and humour shine through all that he does.”

More than a million visitors have already flocked to see the exhibition on its worldwide tour which has included stops in New York, Montreal and London.

All we can say is, “Vive l’enfant terrible!” And of course our flights over to Melbourne have already been booked.  Antonino Tati
