Comedian actor Jerry Lewis has died, passing away peacefully on Sunday morning surrounded by family and friends at his Las Vegas home.

Renowned as the king of comedy, Lewis will be remembered for an astounding array of work in film and television, of which his slapstick brand of comedy went on to inspire so many comedians after him.

Beginning his career in the bawdy days of vaudeville, Lewis always took comedy and action to the edge; his manic persona rubbing off on co-stars, his main partner on film being Dean Martin, with Lewis often playing the ‘funny kid’ to Martin’s straight guy.

Respected by Hollywood greats, from Martin Scorsese and Steve Martin to Jerry Seinfeld and Julia Louis Dreyfus, Lewis leaves behind a legacy of comedic cinema including The Nutty Professor (later remade starring Eddie Murphy), The Ladies Man (see clip top of story), The Bellboy and Artists and Models.

He was a regular on Saturday matinee television in the 1960s and ’70s, later choosing to live a somewhat quieter life toward the turn of the millennium.

Rest in peace, you awesomely funny man.  Antonino Tati
