For over half a century, the name Christian Dior has been synonymous with impeccable style. Ever since the fashion house’s first collection in 1947, the designer giant has wowed the industry with its streamlined and innovative collections. And with clients that have included some of the world’s leading style icons, such as Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Diana, Princess of Wales, Dior has become a force to be reckoned with.

Like Dior, the National Gallery of Victoria knows how to put on a show. And with the coming together of these two creative powerhouses, what you get is something very special, indeed.

Exclusive to Melbourne, The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture is a collaboration between the NGV and the House of Dior and features a sumptuous display of over 140 garments from Christian Dior Couture designed between 1947 to 2017.

Some of the must-see displays at the exhibition include the long sheath dinner dress designed by John Galliano: ‘Absinthe’. Famously worn by Nicole Kidman to the 1997 Oscars, this striking gown is from Galliano’s debut spring-summer 1997 collection for Dior and was considered a ground-breaking moment for red carpet fashion.

For those with more classic tastes, fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent’s early work for Dior is showcased here in five dresses from his Trapèze line. One of the standout pieces from the line is ‘Mascarade’, a short evening dress that captures the burgeoning youth culture of the early 1960s.

So now is the time to get to the NGV and truly be one of the in-crowd.  Chris Prindiville

The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture’ exhibition runs until November 7 at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
