The same-sex marriage bill has been passed in the House of Representatives, meaning that from today, the ban on gay and lesbian marriages is finally lifted, following decades of campaigning by advocates for change.

Public galleries crowded around Parliament House to hear the news at around 4.30pm, with LGBTQI representatives waving rainbow flags and wearing ‘Yes’ t-shirts with pride.

Said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, “I am so proud that this has occurred while I’m Prime Minister, and while the Liberal and National parties are in government”.

When asked how he ranked the bill’s passing in terms of human rights achievements, Turnbull said, “You couldn’t rank them.”

Here is a copy of the official letter from WA Liberal Senator Dean Smith:

A press release from Greens senators Richard Di Natale and Janet Rice read: “Today is a day we can all be proud of. From those who watched the final vote here in parliament, to all of you around the country who have marched, campaigned, lobbied, spoken out, door knocked, fundraised, and fought for so many years to make today possible: thank you. It has been an honor to share this journey with you.”  Antonino Tati
